Lutein, a carotenoid found in spinach, kale and other leafy vegetables, prevents negative effects of UV light on skin in animal study, Richard Granstein, MD, et. al., Cornell University, maintain. Findings could have implications for addition of lutein to sunscreens and other sun-protection products, Lutein Information Bureau says. Study found mice fed diet supplemented with .04% and .4% lutein had significantly inhibited ear swelling in response to UVB radiation in .4% group; affect in .04% group was not statistically significant
