Approximately 39% of 11-18 year-olds surveyed report receiving their worst summer sunburn after applying sunscreen with SPF 15 or greater, according to a study by Kourtney Davis, PhD, GlaxoSmithKline, and researchers from the American Cancer Society. Approximately 79% of 1,192 youths polled from July through October 1998 experienced at least one sunburn during the time period; 11.9% reported five or more, according to the study, which relied on self-reported data from subjects. "There is a real need for better education and awareness of proper use of these lotions," Davis et al. conclude, noting "If youths are getting their worst burns while using SPF 15 or greater sunscreens, then they are not using them correctly."
