Executive Summary

Approximately half of patients experienced mild tooth sensitivity after undergoing home whitening treatment in a four-week study by M.G. Jorgensen, University of Southern California School of Dentistry et al. published in the August Journal of the American Dental Association. Ten percent of subjects experienced moderate sensitivity and 4% reported "severe" sensitivity, study found. Sensitivity decreased with time; by the second week, no severe sensitivity was reported. Trial involved 50 adult subjects using a dentifrice gel containing 15% carbamide peroxide and 0.11% fluoride ion versus 50-subject placebo cohort.
