Executive Summary

October is likely date for commencement of "do not call" registry, Federal Trade Commission announces in March 25 statement outlining schedule for implementation of amended Telemarketing Sales Rule provision. At that time, telemarketers that violate the rule by calling consumers on the list will be fined $11,000 per violation, FTC notes. Consumer registration for placing names on the national registry begins in July. Online registration will be available immediately, while phone sign-up will be phased in regionally over an eight-week period. Consumers must renew registration in five years, commission says.
