Almost one in five consumers (19%) intend to buy fragrance as a gift this holiday season, up 2% from last year, according to market research firm NPD. "It will be interesting to see how all this translates into prestige department store fragrance sales, especially as we have seen a number of important new women's fragrances begin to roll out in stores and retailers also offering consumers attractive promotions," VP and Global Industry Analyst Karen Grant states. In the first nine months of 2009, prestige fragrances in the U.S. generated roughly $1.38 bil., down 11% compared with the prior-year period, NPD says. However, sales of scents priced between $75 and $99.99 and those costing more than $100 were up 2% and 4%, respectively
