Trend for “free of” products in hair care is growing, as consumers demand gentle formulas created without ingredients that dry out hair and scalp, says global ingredient distributor Univar Inc. At extreme end of trend, some consumers are nixing shampoo altogether.
Hair-care formulas that address thinning and aging hair are in high demand, say personal-care ingredient distributors and custom manufacturers in separate interviews. New anti-aging and skin-brightening ingredients, as well as multifunctional products, also are trending, they note.
As of 5 February, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety is evaluating use of titanium dioxide – now officially classified as a Category 2 carcinogen in the EU – in cosmetic products that can expose consumers by way of inhalation. Without a favorable SCCS opinion, the ingredient’s use in those contexts will be banned under Article 15 of the Cosmetics Regulation.
