Executive Summary

Results of a study coming in the July Nature Medicine show omega-3s protect against the development and progression of retinopathy - a deterioration of the retina - in mice, the National Institutes of Health announce June 24. The study shows a higher level of omega-3s reduced retinopathy by 50%. The researchers say the study has implications for premature infants, in whom retinopathy is found, and for people suffering from age-related macular degeneration. A 2006 Archives of Ophthalmology study found omega-3s could prevent AMD (1"The Tan Sheet" July 17, 2006, p. 9). The National Eye Institute is conducting the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 in part to assess omega-3s' effect on AMD.
